Fructose = High Blood Pressure

According to this study, people who eat a diet high in fructose (aka 93% of America), are at an increased risk of developing high blood pressure.

Analyzing data collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), the researchers studied 4528 adult Americans with no history of high blood pressure.

Median fructose intake was 74 grams of fructose per day, corresponding to 2.5 sugary soft drinks each day.

After adjustment for demographics, comorbidities,physical activity, total kilocalorie intake, and dietary confounders such as total carbohydrate, alcohol, salt, and vitamin C intake,those test subjects with a fructose intake of more than 74 grams per day were much more likely to have higher blood pressure levels.

In fact, the heavy fructose users were:

  • 26% more likely to have a BP of 135/85
  • 30% more likely to have a BP of 140/90
  • 77% more likely to have a BP of 160/100

And remember, 120/80 is supposed to be a normal BP reading.

Conclusion

If you’re trying to lower your high blood pressure, cut back on the fructose.

And while you’re at it, don’t think that replacing fructose (HFCS – corn syrup) with plain ole’ cane sugar is much better for your BP..

  1. HFCS also has a number of other health issues the Corn Growers Association don’t want you to know.
    1. It prevents LEPTIN from being secreted, meaning your brain never gets the “I’m Full” message.
    2. It can ONLY be metabolised by the liver, meaning it cannot be digested in the small intestine. In that case, the body treats it as a poison. that’s the job of the liver, to remove toxins and poisons from the body.

  2. It’s more a question of quantity of dosage.

    Ignoring the issue of GMO corn being used to make corn syrup fructose for soda, an apple has fructose in smaller amounts per calorie thanks to it’s fiber. Re the comparison between apple juice & soda, Coca-Cola & other manufacturers use different sweeteners in different parts of the world – sometimes sucrose & sometimes HFCS – both have a similar blend of 50/50 glucose to fructose ratio.

    But of course there are healthy nutrients to be found in apple juice while colas are strictly sugar, caffeine, & flavorings

    My choice?

    Apple first, apple juice second, cola third

  3. Fruit, for obvious reasons is more healthy than fruit juice. My choice, apple, apple juice, cola a way distant last. Fruit has fructose, that’s a given. It also has fibre. When ever we jhuice fruits, we are removing all the fibre and then drinking the fructose. Not good. Take on board the fibre at the same time. I reckon they should change the name of high fructose corn syrup to something that does not have the word fructose in it. That way people wouldn’t get confused. fructose from fruit isn;t the problem, high fructose corn syrup is. There is a huge difference and its in my earlier post. Its all about where it get s metabolised. Fruit gets absorbed in the small intestine. HFCS gets metabolised in the liver.
