Yerba Mate Tea Kills Colon Cancer Cells

In a recent study, scientists showed that human colon cancer cells die when they are exposed to the approximate number of bioactive compounds present in one cup of yerba mate tea.

“The Dicaffeoylquinic acids found in mate tea not only induced death in human colon cancer cells, they also reduced important markers of inflammation,” said Elvira de Mejia, study author.

  • And as we know, chronic inflammation has been linked to cancer, diabetes, depression, heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, etc.
  • And as we also know, most of us have been touched by cancer at some time.  And it sucks.

Personally, someone I love has been recently diagnosed with cancer and we are investigating treatment methodologies – standard and alternative.

I only wish I had found out about this sooner.

Spread the word – drink some mate – don’t get cancer

  1. There is shed loads of stuff on the Internet about how this tea actually causes cancer. I can’t bring myself to believe this article is true when there is so much stuff out there stating the contrary.

  2. Take a look at the research directly. Don’t trust the secondary sources (ie me) without checking their sources (ie the research). Even then, I still take the research with a grain of salt

    It’s good to be skeptical

  3. I had never heard of Yerba Mate tea but after reading this article and your Storify, I see that you should only drink it in moderation. Otherwise, it can increase your risks for other types of health problems instead of preventing colon cancer. Could it be beneficial in preventing colon cancer because it has less chemicals is from an organic plant?

  4. Yes, Mate can help prevent cancer. Yerba Mate does not cause cancer… the only link to cancer and Yerba Mate is with cheap, smoked yerba mate (just like any cheap tea – they have carcinogens too) or from drinking it too hot through a bombilla (traditional straw) which may cause throat cancer… and with most studies conducted for yerba mate and cancer in South America, they realized later that the people studied who drank yerba mate were also heavy smokers and the non-mate drinking test group did not smoke so the risk of cancer is probably linked more to the smoking than to drinking cheap yerba mate through a straw when it is very hot! In any case, top quality yerba mate (processed properly) is very good for you! Full of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants… Try it – you’ll see the difference! http://www.commonsensemarket.ca/yerba-mate.html

  5. I think the big thing with Yerba is MODERATION. From what I’ve read, it has a very high level of carcinogens that can trigger a number of oral and esophageal cancers. Might not be one to add to the daily routine.

  6. Yerba Mate does not have high levels of carcinogens unless it is smoked or dried in a poor facility. Cheap mate, yes, may contain high levels of carcinogens. A good mate like The Mate Factor brand that is dried properly, not smoked or “aged” does not contain carcinogens. It is loaded with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Feel free to add it to your daily routine!
